Born out of the ashes of Tool, A Perfect Circle was formed by Maynard James Keenan (Tool's vocalist) and Billy Howerdel (Tool's guitar tech) after a protracted legal dispute with Tool's former record company. The new configuration drew from the same artistic well, but was more melodic, less dark. String arrangements and other ethereal instrumentation were incorporated to distinguish their sound from Tool's.
Keenan and Howerdel met in 1992 when Tool toured with Fishbone. Howerdel was in the Fishbone crew and impressed Keenan with his original compositions. The seed of a project was planted.
In 1996, after Tool released Ænima, the band was mired in a two-year battle that ended in a joint venture for any subsequent releases. The beaten down musicians, though, decided to step off for the time being. Keenan reached out to Howerdel, along with bassist Paz Lenchantin, and A Perfect Circle was formed. Guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen and drummer Tim Alexander were also recruited.
It would be a 1999 benefit gig at Hollywood's Viper Room that would serve as the band's coming out party. With a resume that includes Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails, Howerdel took on the bulk of the songwriting duties as well as production, with Keenan contributing lyrics.
The band's debut, Mer de Noms, dropped in 2000 and entered at number four on the Billboard album chart, the highest debut placement ever by a rock band. Touring ensued, including a slot opening for Nine Inch Nails. The freshman effort made it all the way to platinum territory.
It was followed by Thirteenth Step in 2003 which featured a more straightforward, song-based sound. A Perfect Circle toured North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan to support the record.
An album of covers, eMOTIVe, and a CD/DVD combo, aMOTION, came in 2004 to mixed reviews, the latter including 13 videos and a bunch of remixes.
Over the years, the Perfect Circle line-up has shifted to include bassist Matt McJunkins, guitarist James Iha (of Smashing Pumpkins fame) and drummer Josh Freese. A Perfect Circle went on hiatus in 2004 to let Keenan take part in a Tool record and Howerdel form the band Ashes Divide. The guys started collaborating again in 2008, but didn't really have anything to show for it until late 2010.
