The band, already considered pioneers in the heavy metal genre, considered disbanding. Afterall, they just lost their charismatic lead singer. Scott's parents however persuaded the band to continue. With their support, AC/DC auditioned several vocalists and eventually hired Brain Johnson. The band's first album with Johnson at the helm was Back in Black. The album, released in July of 1980, went on to become the second highest-selling album of all-time. That's how you move on after losing a band member.
AC/DC formed in Australia in 1973 by brothers Angus and Malcolm Young. The band's lineup fluctuated greatly during their early years but their sound did not. AC/DC quickly gained a reputation for playing very loud. Critics called their music heavy metal, but the band has always referred to their sound as rock and roll. In the band's formative days, Angus Young, the group's energetic lead guitarist, would take the stage dressed in a costume, like Superman, Spider-man, or Zorro. He finally settled on his iconic school-uniform at the urging of his sister.
AC/DC released their first studio album, High Voltage, in 1975. That was followed by T.N.T. later in the year. Both albums were released in Australia only. The band's first international release, High Voltage, came out in 1976. It contained a total of nine tracks, five of which were taken from the band's first two works.
The band followed up the seminal Back in Black with For Those about to Rock We Salute You (1981). It was the band's first number one album in the U.S. and is widely regarded as the band's best offering. It's also the last time they worked with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange. For the rest of the 1980s the band suffered a slight hit to their popularity but they made a triumph comeback in 1990 with The Razors Edge.
The band followed that work with three highly successful albums, although spaced years apart: Ballbreaker (1995), Stiff Upper Lip (2000), and Black Ice (2008). That last recording became the band's second number one album in the U.S.
As of 2012, AC/DC consists of lead guitarist Angus Young, rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young, bassist Cliff Williams, drummer Phil Rudd, and singer Brian Johnson. Williams joined the band in 1977. Rudd, who rejoined the band in 1994, had another stint with AC/DC in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In total, the band has had more than 20 official members.
