About Wilco

When Uncle Tupelo took its leave in 1994, Jay Farrar headed in one direction (with Son Volt) and Jeff Tweedy in another (with Wilco). Along with him, Tweedy brought Tupelo alums bassist John Stirratt, multi-instrumentalist Max Johnston, and drummer Ken Coomer, adding guitarist Jay Bennett to the fold.

Together, they issued 1995's A.M. as Wilco and leaned into the country-rock stylings that Tweedy had long been so fond of. The following year, the guys went big with the double-disc Being There. Critics heaped praise on the effort, citing its incorporation of myriad styles (pop, soul, and psychedelia, among them).

Despite the traction, Johnston departed to join his sister, Michelle Shocked. Bob Egan took his place. To test the waters, the new Wilco partnered with Billy Bragg for his Mermaid Avenue release in 1998. For their third official outing, Wilco issued Summerteeth in 1999. More critical praise ensued, though sales were a bit lackluster. A second set of Bragg material dropped in 2000 as Mermaid Avenue, Vol. 2.

Coomer, then, decided to split. Glenn Kotche took the drum throne for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but then Bennett decided it was time for him to go, too. Tensions with their record company – Warner Bros. 00 came to a head and the band was forced to buy the finished album from the label and end their relationship.

While in a holding pattern, Tweedy scored Ethan Hawke's Chelsea Walls film. The music was later released as an album.

Nonesuch Records licensed the album for a 2002 release with Tweedy, Kotche, and Stirratt, joined by Leroy Bach, hitting the road in support of it. A documentary titled I Am Trying to Break Your Heart traced the whole ordeal and hit theaters in late 2002.

After the touring was completed, the band was back at it making 2004's A Ghost Is Born. This time, Bach called it quits leading to the recruiting of guitarist Nels Cline, keyboardist Mike Jorgensen, and multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone.

To keep things lively, Tweedy fessed up to a drug addiction. A biography, Wilco: Learning How to Die, was published in 2004 and outlined the band's tumultuous history, as well as Tweedy's drug dependency and rehab.

For 2005, Wilco filmed a performance at Chicago's Vic Theater and released it as Kicking Television: Live in Chicago. The 23-track effort was ranked by Q Magazine as one of the Top 20 live albums.

Two years later, the group's sixth studio set, Sky Blue Sky, dropped and made it to number five on the Billboard Hot 200. That was followed in 2009 by Wilco (The Album). A month before the release, Jay Bennett died of an accidental drug overdose.

Wilco took most of 2010 off, but came back in late 2011 with The Whole Love.
