Staind Bio

Some say Staind got its start at a Christmas party in 1993; others claim it was in September of 1995. Either way, singer Aaron Lewis, guitarist Mike Mushok, drummer Jon Wysocki, and bassist Johnny April found each other and a musical romance began to blossom. After more than a year of banging around New England clubs playing cover tunes, Staind issued their own debut, Tormented, in late 1996.

Then, on October 23, 1997, Staind opened for Limp Bizkit in Hartford, Connecticut. An initial brouhaha over their album's cover art caused a bit of a kerfuffle with Fred Durst, but the band's live show won him over. He even went so far as to help them work out some new material and land a deal with Flip Records.

Staind spent the better part of '98 on the Vans Warped Tour and in the studio making Dysfunction, which dropped the following spring and was supported by tours opening for Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, and Sevendust. Durst co-produced Dysfunction for Staind along with Terry Date, who is known for his work with Soundgarden and Pantera.

Though it took its time, Dysfunction broke into the Billboard 200 (peaking at 74). Three singles emerged to push things along -- "Just Go," "Mudshovel," and "Home."

With 2001's Break the Cycle, Staind topped the charts thanks to singles like "It's Been a While," "Fade," "For You," and "Epiphany." Another round on the Family Values tour didn't hurt much, either, as the album went on to sell more than seven million copies. They knew they'd made it big in 2002 with their MTV Unplugged DVD, though it only went gold.

The next year saw 14 Shades of Grey debut at number one and sell some two million copies. "Price to Play" and "So Far Away" were Staind's most mainstream hits yet. When Chapter V came two years after that, it became their third consecutive chart-topper.

For 2006, it was compilation time with The Singles: 1996–2006. But a new release wasn't too far behind. Illusion of Progress was issued in '08, coming in at number three on the album chart. Staind hit the road with Nickelback and Creed to push the agenda further.

Three years would pass, though, before their self-titled seventh set in the fall of 2011 due to Lewis making a solo country record. The new Staind release marked Wysocki's departure from the group. Will Hunt filled in temporarily until Sal Giancarelli was recruited for the Staind drum throne. Singles included “Not Again” and “Eyes Wide Open,” as Staind took to the road with Godsmack and Halestorm on the MASSCHAOS Tour.
