About the Band Kiss

For some reason, the fact that Kiss formed in Brooklyn is surprising. Kansas seems more appropriate, somehow, or maybe New Jersey. But Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss, and Ace Frehley came together in 1973, donned a load of face paint and started spitting blood and breathing fire as part of one of the most elaborate group stage personas in rock history.

The characters they created -- The Demon (Simmons), Starchild (Stanley), Spaceman (Frehley), and Catman (Criss) – were based in comic book-style theatrics and chosen by fans relative to their personalities.

Simmons and Stanley had banded together in Wicked Lester prior to Kiss, but had little success. Planning a new venture, they found Criss through an ad. The trio had a hard-edged sound combined with Alice Cooper-inspired stagecraft. Frehley joined up a few months later, they became Kiss, and their first gig was on January 30, 1973 at the Popcorn Club in Queens.

They hit the studio, got a record deal, and were on their way with a slot opening for Blue Öyster Cult at an industry event. While performing his first fire-breathing stunt, Simmons accidentally set his hairspray-coated hair on fire.

In early 1974, they hit the road just as their self-titled debut was released. Though they enjoyed some solid TV exposure, the record sold only 75,000 copies. The follow-ups, Hotter Than Hell and Dressed To Kill, didn't do very well either.

Because they had proven themselves as an electrifying live act, the next move was a double live album in 1975. Alive! managed to capture some of that magic and went gold, largely on the strength of "Rock and Roll All Nite” which cracked the Top 40.

Keeping the mojo going, Destroyer also went gold in 1976. Then, with the release of the single "Beth," which climbed to number seven on the charts, a Kiss resurgence occurred. The album went platinum and their tours sold out.

Records started coming out at a brisk clip with Rock and Roll Over in late 1976 and Love Gun in mid-1977. Alive II followed in late 1977. All three sold more than a million copies each and led to Kiss becoming a bonafide worldwide phenomenon. They even sold out five shows at Japan's Budokan Hall, breaking the Beatles' record of four.In an interesting and massive marketing move, the members of Kiss simultaneously released four solo albums under the band's umbrella.
