About Creed the Band

In 1995, having been classmates in both high school and college, lead singer Scott Stapp and guitarist Mark Tremonti decided to form a band. They recruited Brian Marshall to play bass and Scott Phillips to play drums and began playing under the name "Naked Toddler." That was replaced by "Maddox Creed" which was eventually shorten to just “Creed.”

The band recorded their debut album for $6,000 in 1997. My Own Prison received attention from several record labels but they all passed on signing the band. Finally, Creed landed a deal with a subsidiary of Sony records that immediately remixed their debut album to make it more radio friendly. The remix proved to be a wise idea as the re-release of My Own Prison broke the Top 40 on the Billboard Top 200 and spawned several hit singles.

In 2001, the band’s second album, Human Clay, debuted at number one. Songs from the album, like "Higher" and "With Arms Wide Open," made Creed a household name. It was also at this time that Marshall quit the band and was replaced by Brett Hestla.

The band’s next released, Weathered, was released in the fall of 2001. It stayed at number one for an impressive eight weeks. The album produced the hit singles, "My Sacrifice," "Bullets," "One Last Breath," "Don't Stop Dancing," and "Weathered."

In April of 2002, Stapp was involved in a car accident that forced the band to cancel several concert dates. However Stapp did recover before the tour’s end. Later that year, at a December 29th concert in Chicago, Stapp’s performance was deemed so unprofessional that he was sued by four concert goers. The lawsuit, which was eventually thrown out of court, alleged that Stapp was so intoxicated he couldn’t sing.

Creed broke up in June of 2004 after selling 35 million albums worldwide. Stapp went on to release a solo album while the other members of Creed, including Marshall, went on to form the rock band Alter Bridge with singer Myles Kennedy.

On April 27th, 2009 Creed announced that they were reuniting. The band would mark their reunion by releasing a new album, Full Circle, and embarking on a world tour.

Creed is often mistaken for a Christian rock band but the band has never been signed by a Christian label, played at a typical Christian venue nor received frequent airplay from a Christian radio station. However, their name is featured prominently in Christian theology and many of their songs like, ”Higher", "My Sacrifice," and "Inside Us All," are inspired by Christian ideas.
