More on Bon Jovi
At the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards two legendary rockers sat down and performed two of their band's, as well as the decade's, biggest hits. However, the duo performed the songs armed only with their acoustic guitars.
The response was overwhelmingly positive. The acoustic performance was so indelible that it led to the MTV Unplugged series.
The duo was Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora and the songs they performed were "Livin On A Prayer" and "Wanted Dead or Alive."
Bon Jovi and Sambora inspired the unplugged genre of recording and performing. Every time you hear an artist doing an acoustic set of their biggest hits you can thank Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora.
Bon Jovi is one of the most successful American rock bands of all-time. Their sound defined hard rock music of the 1980's, but even into the 21st century they have managed to inspire whole new generations of fans.
An example of Bon Jovi's ability to endure is the fact that they have charted number one albums 20 years apart. Their 1988 release, New Jersey, and their 2007 offering, the country influenced Lost Highway, both reached the top spot of Billboard 200.
Since their self-titled debut in 1984, the band has released ten more studio albums and sold more than 120 million records worldwide.
Known as a prolific touring band, Bon Jovi is said to have performed more than 2,600 concerts, in 50 nations, in front of 34 million adoring fans.
Lead singer and guitarist Jon Bon Jovi, lead guitarist Richie Sambora, drummer Tico Torres and keyboardist David Bryan have been with the band since its inception. Hugh McDonald is the band's current bassist. He replaced Alec John Such in 1994.
Bon Jovi rocketed to stardom in 1986 with the released of their seminal album, Slippery When Wet. The recording breaking, hard rock classic has sold more than 28 million copies and spent eight weeks at number one. The album contained three top ten hits, two of which, "You Give Love A Bad Name," and "Livin On A Prayer" reached number one.
In 2009, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. They have also been inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame. That honor was bestowed on them in 2006.
Before hitting it big, Sambora auditioned for KISS and Bon Jovi cut a demo produced by Billy Squire.
