About 3 Doors Down
In the late 1990s, after a few years of playing together, alternative rock band 3 Doors Down recorded a demo CD and submitted it to a Mississippi radio station. One of the tracks on that demo, "Kryptonite," became the station's most requested song for nearly four months. The station's program director gave the disc to his contact in the music business which eventually led to the band being booked at CBGB in New York and a record deal. The band released their first album, The Better Life, in February of 2000. It went on to become the 11th bestselling album of the year and was eventually certified 6x Platinum.
Three Doors Down hail from Escatawpa, Mississippi. They are comprised of vocalist Brad Arnold, lead guitarist Matt Roberts, bassist Todd Harrell, guitarist Chris Henderson, and drummer Greg Upchurch. Arnold, Roberts, and Harrell grew up together. Henderson was added shortly before they cut their demo. Upchurch replaced Daniel Adair who was hired to be the band's drummer for the "Away From the Sun Tour." Before that, the band used session drummers Josh Freese and Richard Lies for their live shows—Arnold recorded the drums part for the group's debut album.
When the band played CBGB it was immediately clear to everyone in attendance that 3 Doors Down was magical on stage. The band has since built a reputation for being one of the best live acts in rock music. They are also very familiar with the road. It's not uncommon for the band to play hundreds of 3 Doors Down concerts a year. Apart from headlining their own gigs, the band has also performed with great live acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Megadeth, and Nickelback.
As of 2011, Three Doors Down has released five studio albums. The band followed up The Better Life with Away from the Sun in 2002. Their next two albums, Seventeen Days in 2005 and their self-titled release of 2008, both debuted at number one. In 2011, the band released Time of My Life. The opus premiered at the number three spot and contained the singles "When You're Young" and "Every Time You Go." Besides "Kryptonite," Three Doors Down lays claim to two other top ten hits: "When I'm Gone" (2002) and "Here Without You" (2003).
The band decided on a name very early in their career. One day, the members were walking down a street in Foley, Alabama when they saw a dilapidated sign that read "Doors Down." The band liked the name but decided to add the number "three" to the beginning since at the time they were a trio.
