About the City of Seattle, WAWhen most people hear the name Seattle they think of rain and coffee. The Emerald City receives less rain than Atlanta, Boston, and New York City. However, Seattle is particularly rainy in November, December, and January. Also, it’s cloudy or partly cloudy nearly 300 days a year. Despite all the clouds, it’s still the largest city in the Pacific Northwest. Another unique aspect of Seattle is its location. The city is situated on an isthmus. Puget Sound is to the west and Lake Washington to the east. Perhaps the gloomy weather is why Seattleites fully support their sports team. The Seattle Seahawks entered the NFL in 1976 and currently play at CenturyLink Field which is widely regarded as the loudest stadium in the league. To honor their fans, the franchise has retired the number “12” as in “12th man.” The Seattle Mariners joined Major League Baseball in 1977. They didn’t field a winning team until 1991. While the Seahawks have been successful in the 21st century (they reached the Super Bowl after the 2005 NFL season) historically both clubs have found themselves at the bottom of the standings. The city’s other major professional sports franchise is the Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer. The team was founded in 2007 and annually leads the MLS in attendance. Seattle has a rich musical history. In the first half of the 20th century it was home to several successful jazz clubs. The city played a major role in the young career of Ray Charles and the birthplace of Quincy Jones and Jimi Hendrix. In the late 1980s and early 1990s it was the epicenter of a subgenre of rock music called grunge. Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Melvins got their start in Seattle. The Seattle Symphony Orchestra is world renowned. They performed at Benaroya Hall. The Seattle Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet, each well respected, hold recitals at McCaw Hall. The 5th Avenue Theatre is the place to see musicals before they hit Broadway. Hairspray, The Wedding Singer, and Jekyll & Hyde both ran in Seattle before reaching the Great White Way.
