About the City of New York
The first musical to play in New York, at least the first musical that modern audiences would recognize as a musical, was The Black Crook. It premiered at Niblo’s Garden on Sept. 12, 1866. It ran for 474 performances (a lot back then) and featured bare-armed dancing girls. Today, the Broadway theatre district encompasses 40 professional venues all with capacities exceeding 500. Every year, fans buy more than a billion dollars-worth of Broadway tickets to shows like Wicked, Jersey Boys, The Lion King, and The Book of Mormon.
When New Yorkers and visitors aren’t attending plays and musicals at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, Ethel Barrymore Theatre, or Winter Garden Theatre they’re rooting for Gotham’s many sports teams. Although they’re called the New York Giants and New York Jets, both of NYC’s NFL teams play in East Rutherford, New Jersey at MetLife Stadium.
The New York Yankees, perhaps the most famous sports team in the world, take on all comers at Yankee Stadium—the house Derek Jeter Built not the one constructed by Babe Ruth. The Yanks’ National League counterparts, the New York Mets, call Citi Field home. That ballpark is located in Queens. The New York Islanders skate at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York situated on Long Island.
Madison Square Garden is billed as “The World’s Most Famous Arena.” It’s not only home to the New York Knicks of the NBA and the New York Rangers of the NHL but frequently hosts the world’s biggest concerts and major WWE events. The city’s other NBA team, the Brooklyn Nets, play at the Barclays Center. That arena also attracts its fair share of top-tier concerts. Other places to attend great live music performances include Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Beacon Theatre, the Hammerstein Ballroom, and the famed Radio City Music Hall.
