About the City of MontrealToday, it's called Montreal but it was originally named “Ville-Marie” which in English means “City of Mary.” The name of Canada's second largest city was then changed to honor Mount Royal, the hill in the center of town. Many of these festivals are held at Place des Arts. That's a large complex of concert venues and theatres that encircle an open-air square. Place des Arts is also the home of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Opera de Montreal, and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. Other venues of note include The Bell Amphitheatre, Oscar Peterson Concert Hall, Metropolis, and The Rialto. And of course, when discussing Montreal and the arts, one cannot omit the fact that the city is headquarters to Cirque du Soleil. The Montreal Canadiens are one of the NHL's “Original Six” hockey teams and winners of a league-high 24 Stanley Cups. While the Canadiens are the National Hockey League's most storied franchise, the club hasn't hoisted Lord Stanley's cup since 1993. The Canadiens home ice is located at the Bell Centre, one of the busiest arenas in the world. The Montreal Impact of Major League Soccer gets their kicks at Saputo Stadium. The Montreal Alouettes are a Canadian Football League team. They play at Molson Stadium, which is located on the campus of McGill University, and sometimes at Olympic Stadium.
