About Cirque du Soleil - The Beatles: Love
Combining the musical mastery of The Beatles with the artistic genius of Cirque du Soleil was bound to create magic. In the case of Love, that proved to be true. Born , the production resides in a Jean Rabasse-designed theatre at the Mirage in Las Vegas that was constructed expressly for Love.
Notably, the show is the first joint venture that The Beatles' Apple Corps Ltd has undertaken.
Love, written and directed by Dominic Champagne, also involves Sir George Martin, the producer responsible for many of The Beatles' classic albums. Martin's son Giles is also on board as a music director for Love.
The original notion for Love traces back to a conversation between George Harrison and Guy Laliberte in 2000. Negotiations got underway with the Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Yoko Ono (on John Lennon's behalf), as well as Olivia Harrison after George passed away. After some three years, an accord was struck and preparations began.
After another three years, previews were staged in order to finalize the production. Feeback from both McCartney and the test audiences guided the reworking.
Then, on June 30, 2006, an official gala opening night boasted an all-star crowd that included members of The Beatles and their families in what was noted to be the “most complete” reunion of the main players since the band's dissolution.
With Lennon and Harrison having passed away, McCartney and the audience offered "one special round of applause, for John and George!" at the end of the show.
As it is based on the music of The Beatles, Love is currently the only Cirque du Soleil production not to employ live musicians. Instead, many of the songs in the show were culled from the original Abbey Road Studios sessions and updated with fresh orchestrations.
Love's 26 music cues are pulled from 130 songs, including a revamped offering of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" that melds the tune's original demo with a new string arrangement composed by Martin.
Philippe Guilottel designed Love's costumes by letting The Beatles' style and historical trends be his guides. The result is a vibrant palette of colorful creations that help tell the story of The Beatles. It touches on their beginning and carries through to their end, culminating in what is the band's virtual reunion — Love.
Portrayed by a cast of more than 65, some of the characters that help tell the tale include familiar Beatles' creations like Sgt. Pepper, Eleanor Rigby, Lady Madonna, Lucy in the Sky, and Mr. Kite.
The $100-million Love theatre, which occupies Siegfried & Roy's previous space, boasts a center stage surrounded by about 2,000 seats and more than 6,300 speakers — three in each seat. Video imagery is handled by hi-def projectors.
