On Your Feet! is a Broadway musical running at the Marquis Theatre. The musical is about Gloria Estefan and her husband Emilio Estefan.
The book was penned by Alexander Dinelaris. On Your Feet! contains music made famous by Gloria Estefan including songs from her days with the Miami Sound Machine.
These songs include “Conga,” “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” “Get on Your Feet,” “1-2-3,” and “Coming Out of the Dark.”
Some of the songs are incorporated into the plot and reveal a character’s emotional state while others are performed as if in concert.
On Your Feet is directed by Jerry Mitchell and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo.
In her Broadway debut, Ana Villafañe originated the role of “Gloria.” Josh Segarra, from the USA Network show Sirens, originally played Emilio.
If you review On Your Feet! in a vacuum you might give it low marks. It doesn’t really bring anything new to the musical stage.
If you review On Your Feet! as a Gloria Estefan fan, or even a causal fan, you’ll walk away from the two-hour, 15-minute show with a huge smile and the desire to Congo.
Yes, On Your Feet! is a little predictable, a little maudlin, and a little cloying, but it works. It’s a well-produced, comforting show that’s anchored by great music and great performances.
You buy On Your Feet! tickets for your mom and aunt—even though you’d rather see Hamilton or Something Rotten! You accompany them to the Marquis Theatre but instead of getting caught up on your sleep, you surprisingly have a real good time.
That’s On Your Feet!
Gloria Estefan supplies the music, but not much drama. After all, Gloria has lived a charmed and fortunate life with the single exception of her 1990 tour bus accident--she’s no Billie Holiday or Janis Joplin.
Supplying the drama is her husband Emilio and his struggle to convince executives that Gloria can sell records to mainstream audiences.
Gloria Estefan has sold more than 100 million records and won seven Grammy Awards. She’s an icon, legend, and trailblazer who enjoys a large base of both English and Spanish speaking fans.
Emilio Estefan is a musician, producer, and former member of the Miami Sound Machine. Emilio married Gloria in 1978. Gloria says Emilio was her “first and only boyfriend.”
