About the Jersey Boys MusicalBringing the story and songs of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to life, Jersey Boys has been a smash on Broadway since it opened at the August Wilson Theatre on November 6, 2005. The musical lays out the tale of four blue-collar kids who went from petty criminals to pop sensations. The La Jolla Playhouse first produced Jersy Boys in late 2004 for a three-month test run. It made its Broadway debut a year later with John Lloyd Young as Frankie Valli, Christian Hoff as Tommy DeVito, Daniel Reichard as Bob Gaudio, and J. Robert Spencer as Nick Massi. It was directed by Des McAnuff and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo. With a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, the story is set to tunes like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don't Cry,” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” It spans over 40 years of their musical history, all the way back to their 1960s' start up through their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. From their heyday to their downfall, it's all in there. Unapologetically, bassist Nick Massi sums it all up by saying, “You sell 100 million records, and see how you handle it.” The Broadway staging has brought home numerous awards, including the 2006 Best Musical Tony Award, the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, and the 2009 Olivier Award for Best New Musical. A New York Post critic proclaimed that it's “Too good to be true. It's terrific! The cast is plain wonderful. The book is as tight and absorbing as an Arthur Miller play. Jersey Boys is a show dynamically alive in music while, as a drama, it captures the very texture, almost the actual smell, of its time.” Touring productions began in 2006 and have received equally warm receptions. The Providence Journal wrote that Jersey Boys “deserves the glowing reviews. It’s got an intriguing story to tell with lots of golden oldies tossed in for good measure, while the singing, especially the high falsetto licks from Joseph Leo Bwarie, is fabulous.” San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, and Philadelphia have all played host to Jersey Boys. In February of 2008, London's Prince Edward Theatre mounted a production bringing Jersey Boys to the West End. Melbourne's Princess Theatre opened their staging in July of 2009. It was such a hit that Sydney brought it to town in 2010. In addition to the touring companies and the Broadway production, Jersey Boys has an open-ended Las Vegas run at The Palazzo, as well. The Las Vegas Review-Journal staff voted it Best Show in Vegas for the past two years, saying, “…the group’s crowd-pleasing ‘Behind the Music’ bio at The Palazzo fits the heart and soul of The Strip better than any Broadway hit tried here.” |
