About Chicago The Musical

Chicago has all the elements you want in a great musical: inviting songs, amazing dancing, and murder. Two murders in fact. Chicago the musical is set in the Prohibition Era in the Windy City and its story revolves around two murderesses, Velma and Roxie. They are two competing vaudeville stars that while in prison battle one another for newspaper headlines. The Tony Award winning musical features the classic songs “All That Jazz,” “When You’re Good To Mama,” and “Razzle Dazzle.” Chicago opened on Broadway in June of 1975. The original production was choreographed by the legendary dancer Bob Fosse.

Chicago’s music was composed by John Kander with lyrics by Fred Ebb. Fosse and Ebb wrote the book. The story was based on a play written by Maurine Dallas Watkins. She covered several salacious murder trails in the 1920s for the Chicago Tribune. A revival of the musical opened on the Great White Way in 1996 and it went on to set the record for the longest–running revival in Broadway history. Overall, Chicago is the Great White Way’s fourth longest-running show. Chicago has been produced for London’s West End and for several tours of North America.
