About White ChristmasBased on the popular holiday song of the same name, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas musical also takes a page from the film released by Paramount Pictures in 1954. All of the music and lyrics are by Irving Berlin, who penned the original White Christmas score. The musical initially premiered in 2004 in San Francisco and has visited venues around the country, including stops in Boston, Los Angeles, Louisville and Detroit. The plot follows Bob and Phil, a successful song and dance team on Broadway who are also Army pals from World War II. Bob and Phil meet and romance two sisters, Betty and Judy. The ladies follow Bob and Phil to their next gig at a Vermont inn, which ends up being fairly empty because of the lack of snow. The group decides to leave, only to find that the owner of the inn is Bob and Phil’s former commanding general from the war. The foursome decides to stay and help drum up some business for the inn. Then, chaos ensues. Betty gets angry at both Bob and Phil because she thinks they are taking advantage of the innkeeper. Judy thinks Betty is actually upset because she is afraid of falling in love with Bob and neglecting her responsibilities to Judy. In turn, Phil and Judy pretend to get engaged. Meanwhile, Bob and Phil have marshaled all of the people in their show to the lodge to turn business around. Betty abruptly leaves for New York to get away from Bob. Bob makes an appeal on national television to get the men from the general’s World War II unit to make a surprise appearance on Christmas Eve. Betty sees Bob on TV and returns to the inn to be a part of the big show. The musical boasts an incredible range of song and dance numbers throughout and of course, the inclusion of Berlin’s classic tune White Christmas brings the entire production together.
