About StompThe summer of 1991 in Brighton, UK, yielded a phenomenon like none the performance world had ever seen. Stomp was created by Steve McNicholas and Luke Cresswell after a decade of working together in a number of different settings. For one project, Cresswell imagined and choreographed a commercial for Heineken titled “Bins” which would become the foundation of Stomp's dustbin routine. The guys finally came together in 1991 to focus on Stomp, opening at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh after a string of previews at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London. Critics raved and audiences flocked. In Stomp, percussive instruments are fashioned from everyday items – metal pots, rubbish bins, pipes, and the like – and used to punctuate the street-style dance moves of the troupe. The original seven-member crew of Luke Cresswell, Theseus Gerard, Fraser Morrison, Carl Smith, Nick Dwyer, David Olrod, and Sarah Eddy added Fiona Wilkes later in the year. Such was the show's success, that the troupe took Stomp on the road with a three-year world tour that touched down in cities as far-flung as Barcelona, Hong Kong, Sydney, and Dublin. When they landed back in London, awards and accolades continued to rain down upon them. The original Stomp also put down roots in Broadway's Orpheum Theatre in early 1994 where it continued to win awards, including an Obie and a Drama Desk. With a new American cast all trained up, the Stomp troupe headed back on tour. In 1995, the Stomp creators boomed the cast to 30 for a Brighton Festival performance that also traveled to Melbourne, Athens, and London. They also produced two more stagings for touring in the U.S. which have also been dispatched to Brazil, Chile, and Korea. Yet another Stomp company was set up in 1997 in the UK for even more world touring opportunities to distant lands like South Africa, Scandinavia, and various other European locales. That same year, Cresswell and McNicholas put together the Stomp Out Loud HBO special which made its way to DVD the following year after four Emmy nominations. As the millennium turned to 2000, Stomp mounted a performance at the Lincoln Memorial for President Bill Clinton's official celebrations. San Francisco also got its own Stomp staging in 2000 for a run that went into 2003. At Brazil's Carnaval 2000, Cresswell and McNicholas started work on Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey, an award-winning IMAX project that took two years to finish. They followed that up with an IMAX 3D project about South Africa's sardine run. In the fall of 2002, London's West End welcomed Stomp back home to the Vaudeville Theatre. The Brighton Festival also staked its Stomp claim by commissioning Pandemonium: the Lost and Found Orchestra which went on to play at the Sydney Opera House and London's Royal Festival Hall. While Stomp Out Loud found a home at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas beginning in 2007, an adapted version of Pandemonium hit the U.S. for a tour in 2010.
