About Spider-Man The Broadway Musical

Broadway director Julie Taymor is creating a new and spectacular musical about Spider-Man. She is working with Bono and The Edge of U2 who are composing the music. The Lion King creator Julie Taymor is directing the spectacular stage show, with the music provided by U2's singer and guitar player.

Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark is a rock musical which opened on Broadway, at the Foxwoods Theatre, on Jan. 11, 2011. The musical is based on the Marvel Comics superhero, Spider-Man. U2's Bono and The Edge wrote the show's music and lyrics. The book was written by Julie Taymor and Glen Berger.

When it debuted, Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark had cost $65 million to produce, making it the most expensive Broadway production of all-time. The musical is noted for its numerous aerial stunts and combat scenes—27 sequences of characters flying through the theatre. These stunts not only added to the show's hefty price tag but they also caused lengthy interruptions during the production's first couple of previews. In fact, the show was originally supposed to debut in February of 2010.

While described as a "rock musical," many of those associated with the production believe the term doesn't do the show justice. Bono referred to Spider-Man as a "pop-up, pop-art opera" while Taymor described it as a "rock-and-roll circus drama." Taymor has officially stated that Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark isn't even a musical. The phrase "turn off the dark" comes from one of Bono's favorite stories. In the tale, a character says "turn off the dark" instead of "turn off the light." It was chosen as the musical's title to reflect how Spider-Man brings light into a world of darkness.

The show's plot follows the traditional story of how Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man. In other words, it resembles the first Spider-Man movie (the one directed by Sam Raimi). However, the musical's plot differs from the movie's plot in several ways: "Arachne," the world's first spider, christens Peter Parker Spider-Man; Uncle Ben is hit and killed by a car; and Spider-Man not only battles the Green Goblin but a gang of super villains called "the Sinister Six" (Swarm, Carnage, Electro, Lizard, Swiss Miss, and Kraven the Hunter).

The original cast of Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark featured Reeve Carney as Peter Parker, Jennifer Damiano as Mary Jane Watson, Natalie Mendoza as Arachne, and Patrick Page as the Green Goblin. Taymor directed the show and was responsible for the design of Spider-Man's mask. The musical was choreographed by Daniel Ezralow.
