About The Radio City Chrsitmas ShowThe Radio City Christmas Spectacular runs from mid-November through the end of December and is a New York City holiday entertainment tradition. Performed at the infamous Radio City Music Hall in the heart of Manhattan, this 90-minute show boasts more than 140 performers, including the famed Rockettes dance group. There are also elaborate costumes, extraordinary stage sets and an original music score. Since its inception in 1933, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular has been seen by millions, even as it has grown and changed through the years. When the show first premiered, it ran for two weeks and piggybacked off of some of Hollywood’s feature film successes shown in the Music Hall. However, in the late 1970s, once films stopped being shown at Radio City, the Christmas Spectacular took on a life of its own, moving from a 30-minute feature to a full-fledged production. It was made more relevant through the use of special effects, new acts and beautiful scene additions. There is a touring version of the Christmas Spectacular that visits theatres around the country; however, theatergoers report a unique experience upon viewing the show in the historic Music Hall. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular was re-designed and re-launched in 2007, to celebrate the show’s 75th anniversary. The show kicks off with the Radio City Rockettes, performing complex choreography replete with their trademark high kicks. They perform to Christmas hits like “Ring Out Those Bells” and “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” One of the show’s original numbers, “The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” is a throwback to the 1933 production, with costumes still made from the original design. Another one of the original scenes from the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is the “Living Nativity,” which utilizes special effects and pageantry to demonstrate the birth of Christ.
