Andrea Bocelli Stars In Christmas Concert For PBS' Great Performances

Italian Tenor Andrea Bocelli stars in a Christmas Concert with Canadian hit-maker David Foster for the PBS series Great Performances.

The show is scheduled to air this holiday season on PBS and is a companion piece to Bocelli's first ever Christmas album.  The collection of 14 songs called My Christmas is scheduled to drop Nov. 3.

The combination of Bocelli, Foster and Christmas is much easier to swallow than the recent coupling of Bob Dylan and the holidays.   While Dylan's Christmas in the Heart  album is becoming a joke, Bocelli and Foster's "My Christmas" is destined to be a holiday classic.

The show was recorded on Sept. 15.  Andrea Bocelli tickets were sold for the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.  Joining Bocelli on stage were Natalie Cole, Mary J. Blige, Reba McEntire, Katherine Jenkins, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

If that wasn't enough to make you set your DVR, Jim Henson's Muppets also made an appearance.   They joined Bocelli for a rendition of "Jingle Bells."

Besides that ubiquitous holiday ditty, expect to hear a bevy of Yuletide favorites including "White Christmas," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "Angels We Have Heard On High," "Caro Gesu Bambino," and "Adeste Fidelis."

Bocelli sings "The Christmas Song" with Cole, a song made famous by her father.  Bocelli and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir tackled the beautiful "The Lord's Prayer" while Boccelli and Blige team up for "What Child Is This."

McEntire sings with Bocelli in a cover of Elvis' "Blue Christmas" and mezzo-soprano Jenkins is Bocelli's partner for the breathtaking "I Believe."

Foster provided new arrangements for all the songs and he also produced the album.

This collection of Christmas tracks holds a special place in Bocelli's heart.

"I have long dreamed of recording a holiday album that captures the beautiful traditions of the holiday season. Every year, these songs have brought incredible joy to me and my family, and it is my hope to give back that same joy by making this album."

Besides Christmas caroling for PBS, Bocelli will also be out on the road this winter for a series of concerts.   In November, fans of the tenor can buy Bocelli tickets for shows in Toronto, Fort Lauderdale, and Fresno.

In December, the Italian crooner will sell tickets to a show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and then for a show in Anaheim at the Honda Center.

Bocelli has sold more than 60 million albums throughout his 17-year recording career.  This past May, Bocelli sang "Il Galdiatore" and the Champions League theme song at the opening ceremony of the 2009 UEFA Finals.

The Journey of The Celtic Women’s Journey

The Celtic Women’s ticket to success was found in the unlikeliest of places, Public Broadcasting.

In the fall of 2004, the Celtic Women recorded a performance at The Helix in Dublin, Ireland.  That performance aired on PBS in the United States in the spring of 2005.  The concert was an instant hit.

Within weeks, the group’s self-titled debut album reached #1 on Billboard's World Music chart.  It stayed there 81 weeks, 68 of which were consecutive.

In 2006, the group premiered another PBS special called “A New Journey: Live At Slane Castle.”  It aired on more than 90% of PBS Stations during their December pledge period.

Celtic Women are currently comprised of vocalists Chloë Agnew, Lynn Hilary, Lisa Kelly, Alex Sharpe and fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt.  Past members include Órla Fallon,
Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, Deirdre Shannon and Hayley Westenra.

The group was created in 2004 by composer and musical director David Downes and executive producer Dave Kavanagh.  Downes is known for his dance-inspired music and Kavanagh was the former manager of The Chieftains and Clannad.

The Celtic Women have released four albums, “Celtic Woman,” “Celtic Woman: A Christmas Celebration,” “Celtic Woman: A New Journey,” and “Celtic Woman: The Greatest Journey.”  Apparently the women like the word “journey.”

The band has completed four successful U.S. tours and a number of world tours.  In 2009, the Celtic Women are embarking on their “Isle of Hope Tour” which will take them to several cities in North America.

Some of the cities the Celtic Women will visit include Los Angeles, Mohegan Sun, Charlotte, Boston and Portland, Oregon.  Accompany the women on their tour is a 19-member ensemble and numerous costume changes.

As their name suggests, the Celtic Women sing traditional Irish folk music.  However, the majority of their set-list includes songs from the world of pop music.

The Celtic Women’s repertoire includes “Fields of Gold,” “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and “Orinoco Flow" (the Enya song mistakenly called “Sail Away”).

The band also sings several compositions by David Downes and Brendan Graham, most notably Graham’s big hit and the band’s favorite song, “You Raise Me Up.”

In reference to other popular Irish acts, like Riverdance and Lord of the Dance, the Celtic Women are often referred to as “Riverdance for the voice.”

Whether they are playing Irish folk music or pop music, the Celtic Women dazzle audiences the world over with their beautiful voices and their awe-inspiring live performances.

And if they aren’t coming to a city near you, there’s always PBS.
