Foo Fighters Push New Album with Documentary, Tour

by kel 29. March 2011 07:45

The Foo Fighters have a new album, Wasting Light (due April 12), that they recorded in front man Dave Grohl's garage. "I literally backed the mini-van out of the garage, pulled the lawnmower out, put a drum set in it and set up mics," Grohl told Q magazine. "We soundproofed the garage door so that my neighbors wouldn't call the cops."

The band also used the opportunity to make a documentary, Foo Fighters: Back and Forth, which recently debuted at SXSW in Austin. To honor both the spirit and content of the album, the band has decided to fully embrace the garage band aesthetic and play a smattering of shows in... well, garages.

To select the venues for the April jaunt, Foo Fighters are hosting a contest that allows fans to submit their garages as candidates in 25 words or less. The tour is limited to specific markets, each tied to a sponsoring radio station. The eight stops include New York, Toronto, Denver, and Chicago, among others.

After that, Grohl and crew will embark on an actual tour, albeit short. The spring run kicks off with Foo Fighters in Tulsa on May 17. Included in the routing are four additional dates along with two festivals – Hangout in Alabama and Sasquatch! in Washington.

Staying mostly in the Heartland, Foo Fighters hit North Little Rock on May 18 and Memphis on May 20 before the Hangout Music Festival on May 21.

Picking up from there, Foo Fighters rock Council Bluffs on May 23. The only other non-festival gig finds Missoula hosting Foo Fighters on May 26 as they make their way to the Seattle area for their May 27 slot at Sasquatch!

Aside from the upcoming album, new documentary, garage adventure, and concert tour, Grohl was also in the news recently because the Foo Fighters joined the ranks alongside Kings of Leon and Guns N' Roses in declining to have their music featured on the smash television show Glee.

Grohl growled, "It's every band's right, you shouldn't have to do f---ing Glee. And then the guy who created Glee is so offended that we're not, like, begging to be on his f---ing show... f--- that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do Glee.

"Slash was the first one. He [show creator Ryan Murphy] wanted to do Guns N' Roses and Slash is like, 'I hate f---ing musicals. It's worse than Grease.' Then [Murphy's] like, 'Well, of course he'd say that, he's a washed up ol' rock star, that's what they f---ing do.' And then Kings of Leon say, 'No, we don't want to be on your show.' And then he's like, 'Snotty little a--holes...' And it's just like, 'Dude, maybe not everyone loves Glee. Me included."

At the moment, Foo Fighters are doing a string of shows down under to raise money for flood and earthquake relief efforts in Queensland and Christchurch. The band jumped in whole-heartedly when they announced the dates a couple of weeks ago. Tickets sold like hot cakes.

Grohl told the sell-out crowd in Brisbane, “I can't fix your roof and I can't mop your floor, but I can play you music. This is all I can do to help."

311 Announces 2011 Unity Tour, Pow Wow Festival

311 Announces 2011 Unity Tour, Pow Wow Festival

Alternative rock superstars 311 recently announced details about their upcoming summer tour of the United States as well plans for their very own music festival.
The 311 concert series in question is of course their patented "Unity Tour."  This is the fifth edition of the popular summer trek and it will include opening acts Sublime With Rome and the Dirty Heads.

In the past, 311 has tapped the talents of Snoop Dogg, Matisyahu, The English Beat, Ziggy Marley, and The Offspring.

The always anticipated "Unity Tour" begins July 6 in Wichita, Kansas and ends Aug. 26 when 311 plays Redmond, Washington (30 minutes east of Seattle) and the Marymoor Amphitheatre.

Highlights of the route include a 311 show in Chicago, Illinois on July 14, a 311 performance in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 16; and 311 tickets for a concert in Holmdel, New Jersey on July 21.

Long before the aforementioned 311 concerts, the Nebraska-based outfit has some oversea dates scheduled for Lima, Peru (March 30), Panama City, Panama (April 1), and Santiago, Chile (April 3).

In May, there's a few 311 concert dates circled on the calendar for Japan but who knows the status of those shows with multiple disasters gripping that island country.

The group will use the "Unity Tour" to promote their forthcoming album.  The pending opus has not yet been named or given a release date but expect it to drop sometime this summer.  The quintet's last record, "Uplifter," came out in 2009.

Fans with tickets to see 311 this summer should expect to hear plenty of tracks from their new record as well as classic cuts from their previous nine studio albums.

Major "Unity Tour" dates include a 311 show in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 26; a 311 concert in Atlanta, Georgia on July 30; a 311 performance in Charlotte, North Carolina on Aug. 1; and a 311 gig in Dallas, Texas at the GEXA Energy Pavilion.

Taking a cue from Phish and Dave Matthews Band, 311 has organized their own music festival.  The "311 Pow Wow Festival" takes place Aug. 4-6 at the 500-acre Suwanee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida (90 minutes west of Jacksonville).  The event will host two stages and 311 will play four sets.  One of those sets will involve the band performing their seminal album "Transistor' all the way through.

A full lineup of bands and other activities is on its way.
All of this is certainly good news for 311 fans but for this blogger one of the aforementioned details serves as a sad reminder of one of music's greatest losses.

The "Rome" part of "Sublime with Rome" refers to Rome Ramirez, the band's new frontman.  The trio had to add "with Rome" to their name after the estate of the band's original frontman threatened legal action.

The Rome replaced Bradley Nowell.  He died from a drug overdose in May of 1996.  Bradley was only 28.

I have a pretty good ear for music.  It doesn't take long before I can tell if a band is good or if they're really good.  For instance, after just a couple of songs I was able predict great things for Radiohead, Kings of Leon, and Kanye West.

Yet, no band has ever made me rush to the linear notes faster, to discover who I was listening to, than Sublime.

While the other two-thirds of Sublime are great—bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh, and no disrespect to Rome—it was Bradley Nowell who was truly special.  In fact, I think had he lived he could have risen to the ranks of performers like John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Marley.  He was that good.

If you don't believe me, check out their 1996 self-titled album or their 1997 compilation, Second-Hand Smoke.  In particular, Nowell's cover of Bob Marley's "Trenchtown Rock."  It's genius.

Perhaps I'm being a bit to hyperbolic.  Perhaps I'm over romanticizing Nowell.  All I know is that whenever I read or hear something about Sublime I think about what might have been.  I think what might have been would have been pretty special and that makes me sad.

Paul Simon Tours North America In Spring, Simon And Garfunkel May Tour In Late 2011

Paul Simon Tours North America In Spring, Simon And Garfunkel May Tour In Late 2011

Simon and Garfunkel were one of rock music's greatest duos.  From 1964 to 1970 the pair released five commercially and critically successful albums and seven top ten singles.  Unfortunately for their fans, while Paul and Art made beautiful music together on stage they were often discordant offstage.

After recording Bridge Over Troubled Water, which would be their final album together, neither performer could agree on the 12th and final track.  When they realized an impasse had been reach, the duo decided to release the LP with just 11 songs.  It was the last straw.

Even though the album went to number one, won several Grammy Awards, and featured the couple's most famous song, Simon and Garfunkel decided to call it quits in 1970 (it was actually their second break up, the pair parted ways for about year in the mid-sixties).

Unlike other great bands that have split and never reformed (e.g. The Beatles, The Clash, N'Sync), Simon and Garfunkel have reunited several times over the years.  Their reunions—either one-off performances, full-fledge concert tours, or studio recording sessions—have occurred in 1972, 1975, 1977, 1981-1983, 1990, 1993, 2003, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Yes, that's right 2011.  It appears fans might be treated to yet another Simon and Garfunkel tour sometime later this year.

The duo had to cancel a bunch of Simon and Garfunkel tour dates in 2010 due to the latter being diagnosed with vocal cord paresis (weakness of the vocal folds).

Garfunkel's recovery is going quite well and he thinks he'll be able to tour with his diminutive on-again-off-again partner relatively soon.

"I feel in my bones, in my cells, that that's the scenario," Garfunkel told Billboard.com.  "Give me a little more time. At the rate the voice is coming back, I should be in pretty good shape by, as the corporations say, the fourth quarter of 2011."

No dates have been schedule for a Simon and Garfunkel tour but there are dates scheduled for a Paul Simon tour.

Rhymin' Simon kicks off his trek of North America on April 15 with a Paul Simon concert in Seattle, Washington.  The 16-city outing wraps June 1 with a Paul Simon concert in Boston, Massachusetts at the Wang Theatre.

Two cities will host the rock and roll hall of famer on consecutive nights.  Los Angeles, California welcomes Paul Simon to the Pantages Theatre on April 20-21 and New York City welcomes Paul Simon to the Beacon Theatre on May 10-11.

This Paul Simon tour is in support of his first new album in five years, So Beautiful or So What.  Many critics, including yours truly, think it's his best work since Graceland.  The album was produced by Simon and Phil Ramone.

Other notable tour stops on the itinerary include Paul Simon in San Francisco, California at Davies Symphony Hall on April 25; Paul Simon in Oakland, California at the Fox Theatre on April 26; and Paul Simon in Chicago, Illinois at the Chicago Theatre on May 17.

Simon has one date scheduled for Canada.  On May 6, Paul Simon descends on Toronto, Ontario for a concert at Massey Hall.

Fans with Paul Simon concert tickets should expect to hear a bunch of his greatest hits, songs he hasn't performed in concert for awhile (also known as "deep cuts"), and tracks from his new opus.

As always, Simon is bringing along a top-notch backing band.  His touring group is composed of guitarist Vincent Nguini, guitarist Mark Stewart, saxophonist/keyboardist Andrew Snitzer, drummer Jim Oblon, pianist Mick Rossi, bassist Bakithi Kumalo, multi-instrumentalist Tony Cedras, and percussionist Jamey Haddad.

Prince Hits Carolinas in Latest Welcome 2 America Run

by kel 18. March 2011 08:50

Last year, the calamity Prince caused with his “The Internet is completely over” statement totally overshadowed his record release, 20TEN. It's a shame, too. By quite a few scores, it was a smashing album.

One critic went so far as to claim that “...it’s as good as his all-time classics like Purple Rain and 1999. 20TEN is a comeback on a par with Elvis reinventing himself in Las Vegas in 1968. 20TEN is as good as anything Prince has done – which means it is as good as anything that anyone has done.”

Others were a little less keen, but not altogether dismissive: “Fans looking for the next 'When Doves Cry,' 'Little Red Corvette,' 'Purple Rain,' or 'D.M.S.R.' will need to keep looking, because you won’t find any of that here. That is not to say this is a bad record, actually, it is quite the contrary.... it’s a shame that grooves this funky, this bad-ass, are wasted on this nonsense.”

In support of 20TEN, Prince and his New Power Generation band have been doing sporadic runs of his Welcome 2 America tour over the past year. More dates lie just around the bend.

So far, the shows have been fairly well received. A recent performance in Oakland earned this praise: “The musicians came to town determined to cement their place in soul history, making many a nod to old school of funk and soul.

“The set started strong, as they rambled through some of their more funky numbers. As they veered off into a Latin theme featuring Sheila E. on percussion, performing her hit 'Glamorous Life,' there was a rumble through the crowd as Carlos Santana took the stage to trade riffs with Prince. That didn’t last long – Prince just handed Carlos his Telecaster, and was content to dance and groove while Santana rocked out like he still had something to prove. Wow. They finished off the set soon after.”

Granted, adding Carlos Santana to the bill is an easy A, especially in the Bay Area which is his home turf. But that was just icing on the purple cake, apparently. Prince can, it seems, still bring it all his own.

The critic continued, “Prince did a stirring version of 'Purple Rain' without a hint of irony … just sweetness and light. He rambled through a super-funky 'Kiss' before giving up the spotlight to his backup singers. On top of all his other talents, Prince proves over and over again that he is a guitar slinger with whom to be reckoned. He then settled into a few of his sexiest soul ballads. There was not a dry eye in the house.”

For the next string of Welcome 2 America dates, it's all about the Carolinas with three shows in each state. Getting things started in the South on March 21, Prince rocks Columbia's Colonial Life Arena.

North Carolina interjects, then, with its three dates. Raleigh hosts Prince first on March 23 at the RBC Center. The next night, Prince hits Charlotte's Time Warner Cable Arena. The third play in the trifecta comes on March 26 with Prince in Greensboro at the Coliseum.

The last two concerts on the slate are back in South Carolina. Greenville gets Prince first, on March 28 at the Bi-lo Center. Then, on March 30, Prince plays North Charleston's Coliseum.

More than likely, other handfuls of shows will be announced as the year wears on.
