311 Announces 2011 Unity Tour, Pow Wow Festival
Alternative rock superstars 311 recently announced details about their upcoming summer tour of the United States as well plans for their very own music festival.
The 311 concert series in question is of course their patented "Unity Tour." This is the fifth edition of the popular summer trek and it will include opening acts Sublime With Rome and the Dirty Heads.
In the past, 311 has tapped the talents of Snoop Dogg, Matisyahu, The English Beat, Ziggy Marley, and The Offspring.
The always anticipated "Unity Tour" begins July 6 in Wichita, Kansas and ends Aug. 26 when
311 plays Redmond, Washington (30 minutes east of Seattle) and the Marymoor Amphitheatre.
Long before the aforementioned 311 concerts, the Nebraska-based outfit has some oversea dates scheduled for Lima, Peru (March 30), Panama City, Panama (April 1), and Santiago, Chile (April 3).
In May, there's a few 311 concert dates circled on the calendar for Japan but who knows the status of those shows with multiple disasters gripping that island country.
The group will use the "Unity Tour" to promote their forthcoming album. The pending opus has not yet been named or given a release date but expect it to drop sometime this summer. The quintet's last record, "Uplifter," came out in 2009.
Fans with
tickets to see 311 this summer should expect to hear plenty of tracks from their new record as well as classic cuts from their previous nine studio albums.
Taking a cue from Phish and Dave Matthews Band, 311 has organized their own music festival. The "311 Pow Wow Festival" takes place Aug. 4-6 at the 500-acre Suwanee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida (90 minutes west of Jacksonville). The event will host two stages and 311 will play four sets. One of those sets will involve the band performing their seminal album "Transistor' all the way through.
A full lineup of bands and other activities is on its way.
All of this is certainly good news for 311 fans but for this blogger one of the aforementioned details serves as a sad reminder of one of music's greatest losses.
The "Rome" part of "Sublime with Rome" refers to Rome Ramirez, the band's new frontman. The trio had to add "with Rome" to their name after the estate of the band's original frontman threatened legal action.
The Rome replaced Bradley Nowell. He died from a drug overdose in May of 1996. Bradley was only 28.
I have a pretty good ear for music. It doesn't take long before I can tell if a band is good or if they're really good. For instance, after just a couple of songs I was able predict great things for Radiohead, Kings of Leon, and Kanye West.
Yet, no band has ever made me rush to the linear notes faster, to discover who I was listening to, than Sublime.
While the other two-thirds of Sublime are great—bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh, and no disrespect to Rome—it was Bradley Nowell who was truly special. In fact, I think had he lived he could have risen to the ranks of performers like John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Marley. He was that good.
If you don't believe me, check out their 1996 self-titled album or their 1997 compilation, Second-Hand Smoke. In particular, Nowell's cover of Bob Marley's "Trenchtown Rock." It's genius.
Perhaps I'm being a bit to hyperbolic. Perhaps I'm over romanticizing Nowell. All I know is that whenever I read or hear something about Sublime I think about what might have been. I think what might have been would have been pretty special and that makes me sad.
