Peter Gabriel's New Blood Tour Visiting Select Venues

Peter Gabriel's New Blood Tour Visiting Select Venues

Peter Gabriel is launching a very unusual tour in 2010.  First, Gabriel tickets will be sold for just nine dates spread out across two continents.  Second, the eccentric rock icon is touring with only an orchestra—no drums and no guitars.

This unique set-up is supporting the release of his eighth studio album, Scratch My Back (February, 2010).  The album was recorded at George Martin's Air Lyndhurts Studios and produced by Bob Ezrin.  Like the tour, the album has Gabriel singing along side a full orchestra with nary a rock band in sight.

Scratch My Back features Gabriel covering 12 songs by 12 different artists (a full track listing is below).  The idea is to have all the artists he covers cover one of his songs.  Then those songs will be on an album called I'll Scratch Yours.

For instance, On Scratch My Back Gabriel covers Radiohead's "Street Spirit (Fade Out)."  Meanwhile, Radiohead is planning on covering Gabriel's 1982 song, "Wallflower" (fans, including the author of this post, were hoping for "Shock the Monkey").

"Thom wanted to do a version of 'Wallflower,' which I'm very curious to hear," said Gabriel in a podcast. "I think that was an important track for him when he was 14."

Gabriel is calling his upcoming trek, "The New Blood Tour."  It's slated to begin March 22 in Paris.  From there he plays two nights in both Berlin and London.

The North American leg, if you want to call three cities and four dates a "leg," commences April 28.

Scratch My Back is Gabriel's first studio album his 2002 offering, Up.  His last tour came in the spring of 2009 when he performed a series of shows in Mexico and South America.

TRACK LISTING
1.  "Heroes" (David Bowie)
2.  "The Boy in the Bubble" (Paul Simon)
3.  "Mirrorball" (Elbow)
4.  "Flume" (Bon Iver)
5.  "Listening Wind" (Talking Heads)
6.  "The Power of the Heart" (Lou Reed)
7.  "My Body Is a Cage" (Arcade Fire)
8.  "The Book of Love" (The Magnetic Fields)
9.  "I Think It's Going to Rain Today" (Randy Newman)
10. "Après moi" (Regina Spektor)

Nickelback Extends their Dark Horse Tour

by Kel 25. January 2010 02:45

Buy Nickelback Concert Tickets

Having already logged a year on the road, Nickelback is extending their Dark Horse Tour with another pass through North America in 2010. The 30 dates kick off on April 6 in London, ON, and wind down on June 3 in Vancouver, BC.

Although the bulk of the dates will be in the U.S., eight of them are slated for north of the border. Nickelback will be Toronto and Montreal as well. International performances will provide a ramp up to the spring swing.

Nickelback's sixth studio outing, the double-platinum Dark Horse, was released in November, 2008 and still holds a place on the Billboard charts after debuting and topping out at number two. The latest single, “Never Gonna Be Alone,” is currently making noise at radio.

Over one million fans attended the band's 2009 Dark Horse shows, leading to a gross of nearly $50 million and the 11th most successful tour of the year. The 2010 run is on track to top those numbers.

Nickelback was also recently anointed by Billboard as the group of the decade.

Supporting acts for the 2010 dates include Breaking Benjamin, Shinedown and Sick Puppies.

James Taylor and Carole King Team For World Tour

by Noiz 22. January 2010 17:52
James Taylor and Carole King Team For World Tour

James Taylor used to be a big deal.  In 1971, he was on the cover of Time Magazine heralded as the vanguard of the singer-songwriter era.  In fact, the term "singer-songwriter" was probably coined just for him.  A year before appearing on the cover of Time, Taylor was propelled into stardom with the release of his seminal album, Sweet Baby James (issued on the Beatles' Apple Records label).

Carole King wrote several successful songs in 1960's including "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," and "The Loco-Motion."  She broke through as a performer with her 1971 juggernaut, Tapestry.  That little album eventually sold 25 million copies and made King the first woman to ever win four Grammy Awards in one year.

Both artists began their careers in the 1960's but rose to fame in the early 1970's.  That odd period of popular music right after the Beatles broke up; rock was still reeling from the deaths of several of its popular icons, and the Rolling Stones were being ravaged by drug use.  Nonetheless, Taylor and King emerged from that turbulent time as folk music's quintessential singer-songwriters.

Now in 2010, Taylor and King are teaming to sell tickets for a world tour.  The duo start their trek in March with shows in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.  The North American leg of their sojourn begins May 7 in Portland and is scheduled to wrap in early July.

Fans can attain Taylor and King tickets for a concert in Bostona concert in Philadelphia, and a concert in New York—just to name a few of the cities they'll be visiting.

This outing is billed as the "Troubadour Reunion Tour."  It celebrates the 40th anniversary of the duo's "historic" performance at the famed Hollywood night club.

The genesis of this world tour stems from a series of shows the couple did in 2007 to celebrate the Troubadour's 50th anniversary.  The six-shows were so well received that Taylor and King decided that when their 40th anniversary rolled around they would honor the event with a full-fledged tour.

However, the "troubadour" angle is nothing more than a cheap excuse.

Who tours to commemorate a 40-year-old concert in Los Angeles that no one remembers?  There were probably a thousand people in attendance and half of those were too stoned to even notice who was on stage.

With Taylor, 67, and King, 61, about to walk off into the Sunset (the Sunset Retirement Center) what better way to squeeze some more cash out of their storied careers then with a hyped-up world tour.

Sadly, Taylor and King don't need an excuse to tour.  If they want to play a concert in Washington D.C. or if Taylor and King want to perform in Toronto, let them.  They've more than earned it.  Just do us all a favor and don't contrive some phony excuse when they do.

Additional dates may be added to the schedule (they're going to wait and see how Taylor's hip holds up) and some shows may be moved due to the NBA playoffs.  That won't be a problem for the concerts in Nashville or Seattle.

Harry Connick, Jr. Plays "Your Songs" on Tour

With three Grammy awards and an Emmy on his shelf and a new album in stores, Harry Connick, Jr. is taking his show on the road.

Backed by an orchestra, Connick will play selections from his new Grammy-nominated release, Your Songs, as well as standards and tunes from throughout his career like “It Had to Be You” and “A Wink and a Smile.”

A show like this deserves to be seen in a great venue and there are plenty on the schedule. A consummate performer, Connick hits Santa Barbara's glorious Arlington Theatre on January 26. San Diego's wonderful Copley Symphony Hall hosts Harry and the gang two nights later on January 28.

Having sold more than 25 million records worldwide puts Connick in a league, not so much of his own, but definitely of only a few. The New Orleans native and occasional actor has also had 10 releases top the jazz charts, more than any other artist in U.S. history.

At Baltimore's Lyric Opera House, Connick will surely delight fans just as he did recently at the 32nd Annual Kennedy Center Honors.

Feeling romantic? Spend Valentine's Day with Connick in Jacksonville, Florida and let him melt your heart with his renditions of the Lennon/McCartney classic "And I Love Her" and Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love With You."

The Your Songs tour will touch down on both coasts with Connick's 13-city run ending in Virginia Beach on February 19.

Wilco Extends 2010 U.S. Spring Tour

by Noiz 15. January 2010 15:35
Wilco Extends 2010 U.S. Spring Tour

The greatest rock band to ever walk the face of the Earth has added a slew of dates to their 2010 spring tour.  Okay, that's a little bit of a hyperbole.   They've only added 16 dates.

The new dates commence March 22 with a show at the Fillmore in Miami Beach and conclude April 11 with a Wilco concert in Pittsburgh.

The additional 16-dates keep the award-winning group on the East Coast.  Their itinerary features a Wilco concert in Philadelphia, a Wilco Show in Boston, and a Wilco concert in Atlanta.

The Chicago-based band is booked in mid-sized venues and their show features songs from all seven of their studio albums.  However, the real motive behind this tour is supporting their 2009 self-titled album.

The newly added shows continue a North American trek that begins Feb. 7 in Missoula, Montana.  The tour has the band visiting the Pacific Northwest (Seattle), the Midwest (Madison), and Canada (Toronto).

Once they're done with North America, Wilco will play a series of shows in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.  Later in the year, the band is scheduled to play a few European festivals.

In addition to their extensive touring, Wilco will honor Neil Young at the 2010 MusicCare Person of the Year concert.  That show is scheduled for Jan. 29 in Los Angeles.
In February, the band is playing a free show in Vancouver, British Columbia as part of the festivities surrounding the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Right now, Wilco is in the studio recording some new material and front man Jeff Tweedy is producing a new album by Mavis Staples featuring Nora O'Connor and Kelly Hogan from the band Neko Case.

If you haven't seen Wilco in concert you should.  Their live shows definitely surpass their studio work.

If you are unfamiliar with the band and their music you should remedy that right away.  While all their albums are solid, most Wilco fans believe Yankee Foxtrot Hotel (2001) is their seminal work.

To get a taste of the band live without having to buy tickets to a Wilco concert check out Ashes of American Flags.  The DVD features Wilco performing live in various cities throughout the United States.

Other stops on Wilco's 2010 schedule include DallasDurham, and Memphis.

They Are Dinos, Hear Them Roar

by Kel 11. January 2010 09:31

Walking with Dinosaurs Live

The original Walking with Dinosaurs six-part documentary series aired in 1999 in the UK and 2000 in the U.S. As the most expensive documentary series ever produced, it holds a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. These days, the creatures dazzle audiences worldwide in a Walking with Dinosaurs arena tour.

The Yorkshire Museum first housed an exhibition back in 2000, featuring scanning models, replicas, and other pieces from the show. However, Walking with Dinosaurs - The Arena Spectacular show is a much grander spectacle. Animatronics and costumed dinosaurs range in size from a small cat to 36-feet tall and roam the stage to a narration by a paleontologist named Huxley. They fight and the largest specimens weigh 1.6 tons and requires three people to operate.

The live show launched in 2007 in Australia and has toured throughout Europe and North America winning various awards each year for its creative content and staging. Over 2.4 million Americans have heard the roars of Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, Utahraptor, Plateosaurus, Tyrannosaurus-rex, and 12 more in the $20 million Arena Spectacular show. Audiences see how these creatures dominated the planet for 200 million years in the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods until their extinction was likely caused by a meteor or comet colliding with Earth. Even the climate and planetary changes, such as the continental splits and ocean formations, are shown.

One of the producers, Carmen Pavlovic, says of the entertainingly educational work: “The BBC Series was a brilliant blend of special effects, escapism, excitement and information. Our show brings together all of that, plus something extra -- it’s live! In this production, 17 roaring, snarling 'live' dinosaurs mesmerize the audience -- and are as awe-inspiring as when they first walked on Earth.“  In March 2010 the dinosaur show will be in Las Vegas, in July the tour will be in New York at Madison Square Garden. And in September Walking with Dinosaurs is in Aneheim and then in Los Angeles.

Supercross: James Stewart Goes For Third Championship While Chasing Most Career Wins

by Noiz 8. January 2010 11:43
Supercross: James Stewart Goes For Third Championship While Chasing Most Career Wins

The 2010 supercross season roars into action this Saturday in Anaheim, California.  All eyes, even those covered with goggles or face shields will be on one man, James Stewart.

Stewart is not only the defending AMA Supercross champ, but he's also vying for Jeremy McGrath's record of 72 career victories.  Currently, Stewart has 36-wins at 24-years of age (which is actually middle age for a motorcycle racer).

Bubba, as he's sometimes called, captured his first career supercross victory in April of 2005 in Arlington, Texas.  It was just his third supercross race.

"We're Americans," explains Stewart. "If you get to five championships, you want 10. But realistically, I'd like to get 73 wins.   If I do good this season, I might catch Ricky [Carmichael].  That would be awfully special."

Carmichael is second with 48 career wins.

If all goes well, Stewart will capture his 40th victory Jan. 30 at San Francisco's AT&T Park.  Number 41 could also come in California, this time when supercross visits San Diego.

The supercross season features 17-events (including stops in Salt Lake City and Phoenix), meaning if Stewart wins all his races, the last of which is held at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, he'd finished the 2010 campaign just 20 wins shy of McGrath.

Winning every race too much to ask?  Not really, he's done it before.  In 2008, after returning from a knee injury, Stewart had a perfect moto season winning 24 out of 24 races.

The kid is mentally tough too.  In 2009, Stewart had to win seven races in-a-row to claim the AMA Supercross championship, a title he won by only four points.  That historic run included AMA supercross victories in Toronto, and Jacksonville.

You could say Stewart is the Tiger Woods of racing (minus the adultery).  The comparison is appropriate since Stewart's presence sells tons of supercross tickets, he has a sponsorship deal with Nike (as well as Yamaha), was pushed into the sport by his father (James Sr. had him riding at age three) and is black.

"Until Tiger and Serena came along, there hadn't been black athletes who had been No. 1 in their sport," Stewart said. "I'm the first black athlete in my favorite sport who also is No. 1 in the sport."

Sadly, we still have "first black this" and "first black that" but the historical significance of Stewart, coupled with his dominance on the track, means he draws legions of fans every time he races.  Whether supercross is visiting HoustonSt. Louis, or they're selling supercross tickets in Atlanta, everyone wants to see the racer that could eventually be regarded as the greatest of all-time.

"People ask me, 'Can you win them all?' I'm going to do my best to do that."
