Incubus To Release New Album, Tour North America

by Noiz 25. March 2009 18:38
You know what a character actor is.

It’s an actor you see all the time in movies and on television but you don’t know their name.  They are quite good but lack the proverbial “star quality.” Basically, they are every guest star on Law and Order.

Rock music has an equivalent to a character actor, the alternative rock band Incubus.

You may not be able to name an Incubus song but you’ve probably heard their music.  They are excellent musicians who are not afraid to mix-and-match genres and experiment with different instrumentations.  Incubus has incorporated a pipa, a djembe, a sitar, a didgeridoo and bongos into their recordings and live performances.

Despite selling over 16 million albums, the band is far more talented than they are famous.  Part of this is due to their own violation and part is due to their shortcomings.  The members of Incubus aren’t the greatest song writers in the world and their music isn't particularly unique.

They are louder and edgier than Foo Fighters.  Their music is more mature than Alien Ant Farm.  They aren’t as corny as 311 but not as serious as Rage Against the Machine.

Incubus hails from Calabasas, California and is led by singer Brandon Boyd.  He originally formed the band back in 1991 with guitarist Mike Einziger and drummer Jose Antonio Pasillas II.  Later, the trio was joined by bassist Ben Kenney and deejay DJ Kilmore.

Their first album, Fungus Amongus, was released in 1996.  Since then, they’ve released five more albums and several performance DVD’s.

On June 16th, Incubus is set to release a two-disc retrospective called Monuments and Melodies.  One disc is comprised of their greatest hits.  It also contains two new tracks, both produced by Brendan O’Brien, called “Black Heart Inertia” and “Midnight Swim.”

The second disc is made up of rarities (which is just a euphuism for songs not good enough to appear on a real album).  The highlight is a cover of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy.”

To support the release, Incubus will embark on a tour of North America that starts July 9th in Chula Vista, California.  The tour finishes August 25th in Glendale, Arizona.

During their tour, Incubus will visit Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Mansfield, Maryland, Miami, Mohegan Sun, New York and Philadelphia.

Surely alternative rock fans have already bought their Incubus tickets, but if you’re unaware of their music you would do yourself a great service to change that.  They are definitely worth the time.

We Wish You A Merry March Madness

by Noiz 18. March 2009 19:23

It’s the night before the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and not a creature is stirring.  All the brackets have been filled out with care and visions of buzzer beaters and Cinderella teams dance in our heads.

The snacks are ready to go in the fridge and the email claiming you have laryngitis is written and ready to send to your boss.

For sports fans, the NCAA Tournament is a lot like Christmas.  In some ways the tournament is better because you can’t watch 12 hours of basketball on December 25th and there’s no fear you’ll receive a fruitcake.

The 2009 tournament has the possibility to be one of the best in recent memories.  Any of the top four seeds, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Connecticut and the North Carolina Tar Heels, can cut down the nets and the field-of-65 is replete with sold, well coached teams.

Even the two seeds are strong this year.  The East’s number two, Duke, has the best RPI in the country and they won their conference tournament.   Blake Griffin, probably the number one overall pick in the next NBA draft, anchors a solid Oklahoma team that the second seed in the South region.  And Memphis, the West’s region number two seed, has won 31 games this season and 61 Conference USA games in a row.

On Thursday, the action begins in Philadelphia, Portland, Kansas City and Greensboro.  College powerhouses like Texas, Purdue, Maryland and Illinois will take to the court and try to advance to the second round.

Friday, the focus shifts to Dayton, Miami, Minneapolis, and Boise.  Schools like Syracuse, Marquette, Kansas, and Pac-Ten Tournament champions USC will begin what they hope will be long tournament runs.

The Sweet Sixteen and the Elite Eight will be held a week later in Indianapolis, Glendale, Boston and Memphis.  The Final Four will be held in Detroit on April 4th, with the championship game played Monday night, April 6th.

What teams will reach the Final Four?  Like Christmas, everyone has a wish list, it’s called a bracket.  And everyone, regardless of how much they like or dislike college basketball, fills one out.

Even President Obama took a break from fixing the economy to fill out a bracket.  He picked North Carolina to win it all.  That must make him the Grinch to Duke fans.

While we hope the tournament matches our brackets, we don’t mind if it deviates as long as it produces a good Cinderella story.  It’s not the NCAA tournament until there’s at least one major upset.

A lot of people think UCLA, the East’s region sixth seed and a team that has reached the Final Four each of the past three years, will fall to eleventh seeded Virginia Commonwealth.  Some experts think another eleventh seed, Dayton, will be this year’s George Mason.

Twelfth seeds Western Kentucky and Wisconsin, as well as eleventh seed Utah State, are also primed to slay Goliath.

Don’t expect miracles from the Eagles of American University.  This plucky team from the Patriot League is playing Villanova in Philadelphia.

And speaking of travel, Portland, Oregon is finally hosting tournament games but Portland State doesn’t get the advantage of home cooking, they have to travel to Boise.  However, two other Northwest teams, Gonzaga and the University of Washington, have the benefit of making the short trip to the Rose City.

Both Arizona and Arizona State have to travel to Miami while Florida State and Cornell sojourn west to Boise.  Hopefully it’s not an NCAA violation for players to keep their frequent flyer miles.

Of course the “Red Rider BB Gun” of the NCAA Tournament is the buzzer beater.   These indelible last second shots are so dramatic we usually remember them instead of actual winner of the tournament.

For instance, UConn’s Richard Hamilton and his fade-away jumper that ended the Washington Huskies’ tournament run in 1998.  In that same year, Valparaiso’s Bryce Drew nailed a three at the buzzer to defeat Mississippi.

In 1983 championship game, Jim Valvano’s North Carolina State defeated heavily favored Houston—that was the Phi Slama Jama team with Akeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.  In one of college basketball’s greatest last second shots, Lorenzo Charles grabbed Derek Wittenberg’s miss and slammed it home right before time expired.

Of course, the greatest last second shot in tournament history occurred in 1992.  Duke’s Christian Laettner, who didn’t miss a shot the entire game, grabbed Grant Hill’s long baseball pass, faked, dribbled once, and then nailed a turn-around jumper to give the Blue Devils the improbable victory over the Kentucky Wildcats.

Sadly for Kentucky fans, this year marks the first time the Wildcats have missed the NCAA tournament since 1991.  Conversely, this is Michigan’s first tournament appearance since 1998.

In other tournament trivia, North Dakota State isn’t getting a dime for participating in March Madness.  That’s the price they have to pay for joining the Summit League.  Also, North Dakota State is the first school to reach the tournament in its first year in Division I since Louisiana-Lafayette did it back in 1972.

Jeff Jones and Ralph Sampson were teammates at Virginia.  Jeff Jones is now the coach of American and Sampson’s son plays center for Minnesota.  The two teams could meet in the Sweet 16.

If Louisville coach Rick Pitino reaches the Final Four it will be his sixth trip and will move him past Guy Lewis, Lute Olson and Roy Williams into sole possession of sixth place.

The last five times North Carolina have been a number one seed they have reached the Elite Eight or better.  Also, the Tarheels have earned the most number one seeds (12) in tournament history.

We all want to win the office pool, we all want our favorite team to cut down the nets and we all hope the underdog pulls off the impossible upset.  But even if none of these things happens, the NCAA Tournament is still a holiday for sports fans.

For like most holidays the NCAA Tournament will bring unbridled happiness and joy to scores of fans and players.  And like most holidays, the tournament will also bring heartache, pain and indigestion.

Cookin' up a Comedy Tour in '09 - Dane Cook's Isolated Incident

by Administrator 12. March 2009 02:55

Comedian Dane Cook has not only conquered the stand-up comedy world, but the Bostonian has also achieved success as a recording artist, a TV star and a screen actor. And he draws huge crowds now at all his stand-up concerts.

Cook has had a comedian's dream ascent into stardom. From Comedy Central to selling out Madison Square Garden to starring in major motion pictures to having a certified platinum CD/DVD (Harmful if Swallowed), Dane Cook was touched by the Comedy Gods themselves.

Now this isn't to say his comedy is any good. Some argue that he is not a great comedian. Others would argue he's hilarious. There's a little controversy there to be sure. One thing is for certain. If bank account size is used as an indicator for success, Cook is pretty darn successful indeed.

And of course Dane Cook has a gigantic following as well. He sells out shows wherever he goes.

On November 13, 2007, Cook released his third CD/DVD entitled Rough Around The Edges, which was filmed live at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Comedy Albums chart. Cook then began his first ever arena tour and it was a big success.

This year, Dane has cooked up a plan for a major tour. The Isolated Incident – Global Thermo Comedy Tour is being proclaimed the largest comedy tour in history, according to a statement on Cook’s Web site. The first round of U.S. and Canadian dates have been announced with the tour kicking off at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., April 25 with dates through a show at Philips Arena in Atlanta, June 27. Additional dates include performances at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., (May 2), Air Canada Centre in Toronto (May 8), three nights at Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas (May 22-24) and United Center in Chicago (June 14).

“Isolated Incident” will be on Comedy Central in May and the accompanying CD/DVD is set to be released on May 19th. Cook has lately been used to performing his stand-up routines in front of thousands and thousands of fans. However, Dane switched it up and instead performed in front of 20 people at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood, Calif. See the video below and after that see the new tour's North American itinerary.

Phantom of the Opera: Some Facts Unmasked

by Noiz 10. March 2009 19:16
Perhaps no entertainment venture intended solely for a live audience has been seen as much as “Phantom of the Opera.”

The Broadway production of Phantom, playing at the Majestic Theatre, is the Great White Way’s longest running show of all-time.  It surpassed the former record holder, “Cats,” on January 6th, 2006.

Phantom can still be seen in London’s West End at Her Majesty's Theatre.  It began its run on September 27th, 1986 and celebrated its 9,000th performance on May 31st, 2008.  It’s the second longest running West End musical in history.  Only “Les Misérables” has run longer.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical has been seen by more than 80 million people in 124 cities in 25 countries, including Australia, Brazil, China, Japan and Poland.

A production in Argentina is scheduled to debut on March 19, 2009.  And there’s a rumor of a Russian production of Phantom opening in 2009.

If you’re in Las Vegas you can see one of only two Phantoms allowed to deviate from the original staging.  “Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular” is a 95-minute, intermission-less production of the show playing at The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino.  The show features state-of-the art technology and a $40 million custom-built theater.

There are currently three touring productions of Phantom; one in the United States, one in Canada and the other in Southeast Asia.

In 2009, the American touring company will be performing “Phantom of the Opera” at the Temple Buell in Denver, Colorado; the Music Hall Kansas City in Kansas City, Missouri; the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts; the Bushnell Theatre in Hartford Connecticut; and the Orange County Performing Arts Center at the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa, California.

While Phantom is one of the most familiar musicals of all-time there are still several aspects of the show you may not know.

For instance, Jim Steinman declined Lloyd Webber’s offer to write Phantom’s lyrics because of a previous commitment to produce a Bonnie Tyler Album.

Lloyd Webber then enlisted the services of Alan Jay Lerner (“Gigi,” “My Fair Lady,” “Camelot”) but he died shortly after joining the project.

Before Michael Crawford originated the role of the Phantom, he was best known in England as star of the BBC comedy series “Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em” and in America as the star of the Disney movie “Condorman.”

When a theater is too small to accommodate Phantom’s large orchestra, the show uses pre-recorded tracks.  These pre-recorded tracks are employed during the Overture and the first two verses of the title song.

Pre-recorded tracks are also used for most of the Phantom’s off-stage voiceovers and they are sometimes used for Christine’s high note at the end of the title song.  The recording help protects the actress’ voice from the strain of singing that high note on a daily basis.

Rob Guest played the Phantom for 2,289 performances over a seven year period in Australia.  That’s more performances of that role than any other actor including Crawford.

Sarah Brightman, who originated the role of Christine Daaé, was married to Lloyd Webber from 1984 to 1990.

The first Phantom production permitted to change the original staging began in 2003 at the Madách Theatre in Budapest, Hungary.  The production used original sets, costumes and direction.

“Phantom of the Opera” was adapted from the French novel by Gaston Leroux.  The novel was first published as a serial in a French newspaper from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910.

Judy Kaye, who played Carlotta Giudicelli in the original Broadway cast of Phantom, later went on to star as Rosie in the original Broadway cast of “Mamma Mia!”

“Phantom of the Opera” has grossed more than $5 billion since it first premiered in 1986.  It’s the most successful entertainment venture of all-time, even out grossing the world’s highest-grossing film “Titanic.”

Manny Ramirez Is A Dodger

by Noiz 4. March 2009 18:35
Our long national nightmare is finally over.

Manny Ramirez and the Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed in principle to a 2-year $45 million deal.

"We got a great meeting.  I'm happy to be here. We got some unfinished business, and that's why I'm here," Ramirez told KCAL-TV.

According to reports, $25 million of Manny’s contract is deferred over five years, the slugger has the right to opt out after one year and there’s an iron clad no-trade clause.

Yawn.

This was the most tedious sports story of the winter.  There was never any question that Ramirez was going to be a Dodger, after all Los Angeles was the only franchise even vying for his services.

The deal Manny agreed to was almost identical to the Dodgers’ original offer made four months ago.

So what made Ramirez sign when he did?  The answer is as simple as “just because.”  Manny’s decided it was time to start playing baseball so he called his agent, Scott Boras, and said let’s get a contract done.  In less than a day, the two parties reached an agreement.

Since Manny basically agreed to their original offer, the Dodgers come out winners in this deal.  They get a super star that can put fans in the seats and flat out hit a baseball.

Ramirez is a 12-time All-Star with 527 home runs, 1,725 RBIs (second only to Ken Griffey Jr. among active players) and a life time batting average of .314.

As for Manny, he’s getting about what he would have been paid had he remained with the Boston Red Sox.

Then again, it was never about money, it was always about Manny being “respected.”  It was about Manny being “appreciated.”  As we all know, paying someone tens-of-millions of dollars to play poor defense, slowly run the bases and hit like an All-Star is no way to say thank you.

While Ramirez’ has hall of fame numbers, his reputation will someday be enshrined into the hall of shame.  He’s arguably the most selfish player in the league.

Last year, after basically refusing to play for the Boston Red Sox, Ramirez was traded to the Dodgers where he absolutely destroyed National League pitching.

In his 100 games as a Red Sox he batted .299 with only 20 home runs.  After being traded to the Dodgers, Manny batted .396 and hit 17 homers in 53 games.

Then in the postseason, Ramirez continued his tear by hitting a mind boggling .520 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in eight playoff games.

Professional sports has a word for what Manny did last year as a Red Sox, it’s called “tanking.”

Ramirez turns 37 in May and his days of putting up “Nintendo” numbers may be over.  Even so, Dodger fans seem to love “Manny being Manny” (at least for now) and in a weak NL West, his bat in the lineup means Los Angeles will be making another trip to the post season.  For the Dodgers that’s worth $45 million.

"Get there early," bassist Tony Kanal added. "This is going to be a great night from the moment the lights go down."

"What a dream tour! We couldn't be more excited to kick off 2009 by touring with a band like No Doubt," Paramore singer Hayley Williams said in the statement on No Doubt's Web site.
