Whether you are coming to Toronto during the summer, winter or fall you better be prepared for an extraordinary time. Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the entire world. So much so that it earned the nickname: “world within a city”. The citizens of Toronto come from well over 80 cultures all around the world bringing with them over 100 languages and dialects. The city is easily accessible by all modes of transportation and it is a fact that over 1/3rd of the popular of Canada lives within a 160 kilometer radius.
Coming to Toronto is like visiting Paris, New York and Rome at the same time. The attractions are seemingly endless and range from great day time fun like the Art Gallery of Toronto, one of the largest museums in North America. The theatre scene in Toronto is only rivaled by such scenes found in New York City or London. Everything is accessible by Toronto’s top notch transit system which is the second largest in North America. You will have endless transportation to hotels, eateries, theatres, night clubs, the waterfront; and over 1,200 retail outlets – a shopper’s paradise.
A great college town, Toronto is made home to three universities, an art college, private educational institutions and four community colleges. If architecture is your thing then Toronto is gold to you with over 22 different styles including both historical and contemporary from the neo-classic elegance of Union Station or the gothic neo style of the University of Toronto. Toronto is home to many festivals, concerts and live performances.
Broadway comes to Toronto! Only outside of New York City can you find such a varied grouping of live stage performances. The theatre community in Toronto is top notch and does not show any signs of stopping! Toronto is a great cultural with many fantastic Broadway plays and musicals. The tickets are more affordable than our cousins in London or New York and they are available for famous productions like Wicked, Camelot, Phantom of the Opera, The Lord of the Rings, and Fame Becomes Me, just to name a few. If you are a theatre buff like I am then you will want to know the top shows that are coming to Toronto over the course of the year!
One of my all time favorite shows is Cirque Du Soleil. They are in Toronto with a new performance entitled Saltimbanco and it should not be missed! Other shows making their way to Toronto’s big stage is the remake of the classic movie: Dirty Dancing. Disney is not left unnoticed bringing two Disney on Ice performances for High School Music and Princess Classics. Jersey Boys, My Fair Lady and the classic Phantom of the Opera are also on the bill. Rent is always a crowd pleaser and favorite among locals and world travelers alike. If there is one show you will see all season do not look past Wicked – a phenomenal performance and it is now here – in Toronto.
If you want a lazy day in the sun commiserating with the locals and baseball happens to be a love of yours then feel free take in a ball game and the Toronto Blue Jays take it to the New York Yankees or Minnesota Twins! There is nothing like a great day at the ball park with other baseball fans enjoying a cold pint of beer, roasted peanuts or a stadium foot long hot dog!
Do not let all of the cultural diversity fool you. Do not let the laid back feel of the theatre district cloud your judgment or the lazy day of a ball game make you think differently. Toronto is a town where you can party it up rock star style. The night life here is second to none. If you think that Las Vegas or New York do not sleep then you will be surprised to find out that Toronto can give them a run for their money!
The home of diversity does not stop with the people. The musical scene in Toronto is just as varied and diverse. You can walk down the street and find Reggae steel drums pounding out a beat to make you move in your seat and feel the Caribbean in your blood. You can dance the night away at any one of a dozen DJ clubs or rave destinations. If soul, blues or jazz is in your soul you have the House of Blues to whet your whistle. Good old fashioned Rock and Roll is therefore you too! Toronto is also home to the only two symmetrical bars in the world: Amnesia and Insomnia. Both are very much alike and, at the same time, very different – they are right across the street from one another as well.
